Jane Colquhoun
Thread painted machine embroidery detailing the colour, patterns and shapes of grouped people and their paraphernalia, mostly at the seaside. Taken from reworked digital photos and sketchbook studies.
I am often drawn to create picture postcard representations of local landmarks using fabric collage, drawing over with machine stitch, adding graphite or paint in places. Often a scrap of fabric will inform the choice of imagery. Sometimes combining the theme of figures in seaside spaces and utilizing the palette of bold seaside graphics -deckchair stripes, fun parks, Punch and Judy, beach kiosks.
Other landscape work may be more muted, with a cooler palette defining the natural world – cliff or seascape, footpaths, natural or man made forms in the landscape.
